Arizona is a special place that often gets overlooked. “What else is there to do besides the Grand Canyon?”, is something you hear a lot. As a photographer, I love it there. The light and landscape are very unique, especially when you get up into the northeast corner. Sometimes it can feel like you’re on a different planet, which is why I’ve always called this shot “Mars”. Some time in 2013 I happened upon this scene while driving through a desolate Indian Reservation. Slammed on the breaks and turned around to get a closer look. The whole vibe there felt lifeless. About 60 yards away were a small grouping of adobe homes, but no sign of any humans anywhere in sight. It was silent, save the wind. Still though, asking permission is the right thing to do, so I approached the closest home. When I got 30 feet from the house there was an eruption of energy. People started pouring out of each home, and every one of them crying uncontrollably. It was awkward, but it almost felt like I was invisible. Not until the group walked right past me did a younger guy ask what I was doing. After a brief and fumbled explanation I told him I was sorry to interrupt and would come back another time. About a year and half later I was back in the area specifically to photograph this hoop. Not a thing had changed visually since the last visit. It all looked exactly the same, only this time there was no horde of crying people. A Native American woman answered the door that didn’t speak any English, so I used my best hand language to explain the situation. She couldn’t have fully understood, but seemed happy enough and kept nodding her head yes.
