BARBERSHOP WALL ART - BROOKLYN
PHOTOGRAPHY PRINTS OF BARBERS
Duckett Barbershop - Brooklyn, New York
It’s amazing how personal projects can lead to organic connections with like minded people and brands. Over the past 10+ years this series has led to incredible friendships/partnerships that I hope will last forever. In 2018 Vans hired me to photograph barbershops all over Brooklyn. So I spent 3 days wandering around the burrow by foot, sniffing out barbershops, and eating twice my weight in pizza. It was a dream. Afterward the photos were printed and hung for the grand opening of the Vans General Store in Williamsburg. It was a great party where I was able to catch up with barbers I photographed years prior when this project first started and met plenty I never knew existed. Duckett’s Barbershop was particularly memorable. It’s located in a Jamaican neighborhood and I expect that the owner was a bit suspicious of my intentions. You want to do what? Why? To help the situation I pulled a copy of Barbershops of America from my camera bag and handed it to him. He sat in his reclining chair and leafed through all 170 pages at a snail’s pace, never lifting his head or saying a word. After finishing he closed the book and said “ok, take your pictures”.
These fine art photography prints capture the essence and nostalgia of a traditional American barbershop, presenting a compelling visual narrative that transports the viewer into a bygone era. Traditional barbershop represent a specific piece of American that believes in craftsmanship, and each detail of a shop, from the worn leather upholstery to the barber's tools on display, tells a story of tradition, skill, and the timeless art of grooming. This series of photographs evoke a sense of community and camaraderie, capturing the spirit of a place where conversations flowed as effortlessly as the scissors, offering a nostalgic and intimate glimpse into a quintessential slice of American cultural history.
