After years and years of travel, it’s my opinion that there are 4 great cities in America, and San Francisco is damn near the top of that list. My mother lived there for a few years in the early 70’s, so that might be part of the initial attraction? Either way, it’s a place that I’ve grown to love more and more with each subsequent visit, and would argue that there isn’t another place in the country with so many layers. On the face, it’s got some of the most iconic landmarks America has to offer. And don’t get me wrong, because I love the Golden Gate Bridge, but the world doesn’t need any more pictures of it. There is so much more to San Francisco than the bridge, the Embarcadero, and the baseball stadium. It really is a 1/1 and it’s those things you see in the neighborhoods, away from the tourist traps, that make it truly great and unique. Over the past couple years I’ve made a number of personal/commercial trips there, and always make time to explore with a camera. Much like I do on international trips to foreign cities with one camera, one lens, and a good pair of sneakers. I’d argue that there is no better way to learn about a place than by foot. And it’s been my pleasure getting to know San Francisco on a more intimate level through all its hilly side streets and neighborhoods. Compared to my other projects like Barbershops of American and American Backcourts, which have been going on for almost ten years, this one is quite young. Regardless, I’m quite obsessed with it, so please check back soon to watch it grow.
