You might recognize Susan from her SI body issue a couple years ago where all the athletes were naked. Susan couldn't have been more fun to shoot with. Great sense of humor and was down for whatever. This was a really fun shoot for me too because I put on the old wetsuit and got in the water with her. Also had my assistant in the water holding a strobe with the power pack strapped to his back. Thanks Jay!

Shot a very interesting assignment last month for San Diego Mag. The article is on the high levels of Gang activity in South East San Diego. I was told by Michael Brunker (featured below) that there are 52 different Gangs in SD and the murder/crime rate is extremely high in that area. Once a long time coach for the Detroit Pistons, he is now head of the YMCA and trying to keep kids off the street and out of gangs. Interesting article. Definitely worth a read. I shot Michael at the YMCA and also went to the graveyard where many of the local murder victims have been buried. Photographing these flat...
Can't get enough of this gym. Especially this beat up green wall. Gem! The light coming in through the narrow windows out of frame left was awesome, but not quite enough. So I just sort of mimicked it with a little of my own and amped it up a little bit. Wanted to keep it directional and hard so I just stuck a bare White Lightning outside of the window and shot it through the slots. Which created a cool pattern on the back wall and almost looks totally natural. Tried to stick with that natural hard window light look on all of these except the last one (obviously). LEON.

Every barber I have encountered in life and on this project has been a character. This guy was no exception. Character probably doesn't do him justice. It could just come with the trade, or it runs in his family. Robert is the last in a family of barbers dating back 177 years. The shop he is in has been occupied by his family since 1964. And the walls in the back are covered in newspaper articles written on this family of barbers. Learned a lot of knowledge during my time in this shop. Some of it useful. Some of it useless. For instance, I learned that "the female bedbug has no vagina." Robert...
Creating highly stylized images with lots of strobes is what I love doing the most, but sometimes you don't need all that. Sometimes you just have to get out and shoot. Leave the lights at home. Create something powerful with your eye and one lens. In the last couple weeks I've had 2 speedlights, 2 strobes, and a Pocketwizard shit the bed on me. So Heading out yesterday with only a camera seemed like a logical option. Emily and I went for a hike out east, somewhere along the Mexican border. And this image is the result. Something I am far happier with then anything I've shot in the past couple...
Finally settling back in today after a busy week of shooting in San Diego, Colorado, and New Hampshire. Lucky person. Have a lot of blog posts to catch up on. The first being this one from a shoot a few weeks ago with Heidi Carlsen. There were a lot of things that didn't turn out the way I originally planned for this shoot. On the other hand, I came out of it with some cool shots. Heidi is a very genuine person, keeps herself in fantastic shape, and has skin that takes light incredibly well. Love that. After scouting this location I wasn't sure if it would work, but tried some running shots anyway...
Had a crazy weekend moving into a new place. It's only 3 blocks from my last one, but it was still extremely time consuming. We're just about settled now and really excited about the new digs. It's got an awesome 2nd floor patio and more importantly, a garage for all my shit. It's was weird being without internet for 3 days, but great at the same time.
Anyway, I took these shots so long ago I don't even remember when it was. Had to have been last summer. It was the second shoot I've done with Greg and Laura Bennett. This time is was for one of their sponsors, Bio Energy Ribose. You can check...
After logging in today I realized this will be blog post #400 for RHP. I remember doing #300 and can't believe it has already been over a year. A lot has changed since then and thankfully most of those changes have been extremely positive. Direct proof that hard work pays off. You gotta "Keep On, Keepin' On."-Joe Dirt. That aside, here are some more Barber Shop images from another shop in San Diego. Allied Gardens Barber Shop started in 1955 and went trough 4 different owners before Nick Lovell took it over from his Old Man on October 31, 1987. He spit that fact at me immediately after I asked...

Way too many lighting set-ups here then I feel like listing. Used a lot of bounce boards which is sort of unusual for me. Happy with the outcome.
